Interested in Adopting?
Adoption is a significant life choice that comes with many steps. CPO has been supporting adoptive families since 1983 as a fully licensed adoption agency with the State of Oklahoma.
We work directly with both hopeful adoptive families and expectant mothers, which means the same team supports you throughout the entire journey.
If you are ready to learn more, here is what the process looks like.
Who CPO Works With
CPO’s waiting families share a common set of values and commitments. To be considered, families must be committed Christians who are active in their communities, have been married for at least 3 years, and complete a licensed home study and adoption-specific training.
Families live in Oklahoma and other states and are prepared for lifelong connection and post-placement involvement.
CPO welcomes families who are open to children of all races and backgrounds, including those with special medical needs or prenatal exposure histories.
How the Process Works
The first step is to complete and submit a CPO Adoption Application, along with a $300 application fee. Once received, CPO will contact you to schedule an interview. For families outside of Oklahoma, interviews can be conducted by phone or in person.
After your application and interview are reviewed, you will be notified of whether your application has been approved. If approved, you will receive a checklist of next steps, which includes beginning the home study process and creating your Life Book, a personal family profile that expectant mothers will use to get to know you.
During this stage, you will be assigned an adoption mentor to guide you through the process and answer questions along the way. You will also be required to attend CPO’s Waiting Families Workshop, a two-and-a-half-day training specifically for adoptive families. Reading required books, attending adoptive family support group meetings and events, and completing volunteer hours are also part of the process.
The Matching Process
Once your Life Book is ready, CPO will present it to expectant mothers whose preferences align with your profile. Many expectant mothers review several books before selecting two or three families they would like to meet. That meeting takes place in a comfortable, neutral setting where both families and expectant mothers can ask questions and get to know one another.
If you are chosen, you will be notified right away and can begin building a relationship with the expectant mother. Depending on how far along she is, she may invite you to attend medical appointments, join a support group meeting, or simply spend time together at CPO.
After a match is made, you will meet with CPO’s adoption attorney to begin the legal process.
A Team Around You
CPO’s staff and family mentors are with you from application through placement and beyond. Adoptive family support groups and events continue after your child comes home, because we know the journey does not end at placement.
